James E. Evans Jr., affectionately known as Mr. More Than a Barber, is a living testament to the power of transformation, resilience, and purpose. Raised in a nurturing two-parent household grounded in both Apostolic and Baptist traditions, James was the eldest of seven children—a natural leader from the start. His early life was marked by excellence in academics, sports, and music, earning him honors such as - Who’s Who Among American High School Students and Black Achievers.
Yet, despite his strong foundation, James encountered the allure and pressures of street life, influenced by both peers and family members navigating dangerous paths. One life-altering decision placed him in the wrong environment at the wrong time, ultimately leading to nearly eight years of incarceration. But instead of allowing prison to define him, James used it as a crucible for growth.
Behind bars, he pursued his barber’s license, organized a church choir, and built bonds with fellow inmates—listening to their stories, offering encouragement, and reclaiming his sense of purpose. He emerged from incarceration not defeated, but determined.
Refusing to let his past dictate his future, James launched his own barbershop and developed a product line, dedicating himself to uplifting those who have walked similar paths. His life’s philosophy, “Teach me to fish for eternity, not for a day,” speaks to his enduring commitment to empowerment, sustainability, and second chances.
James’ journey has not been without struggle. He has survived a near-fatal car crash, a house fire that took everything, and deep battles with mental health—including moments of profound despair. But through every trial, he found renewed strength. His message is clear: adversity does not have the final word.
Today, as a licensed master barber and instructor, motivational speaker, mentor, and founder of TRE Unlimited Core Service Inc., James pours his energy into mental wellness, job placement, and mentorship programs. His work champions inclusivity and actively dismantles the stigma surrounding formerly incarcerated individuals.
James lives by the scripture, “Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.” His story is not just one of survival—it’s a call to rise, to transform, and to believe in the possibility of a brighter future.
